Smooth, smart and sustainable roads

Undoubtably everyone has noticed an increasing number of road works hitting the UK roads. It is sometimes frustrating when you are late for work and struggling to find the next diversion sign, however you have to think of the bigger picture.

The UK Government has recently introduced a brand new strategic approach to maintaining and improving the infrastructure of roads in the UK, with the main aim of making the roads smooth, smart and sustainable. With huge investment of 15.2 billion, the hope is to improve the network of the roads as well as providing a sleek ride for the road users.

The RIS 1 strategy comprises:

  • Investment for over 100 major schemes, to improve the network and ease the traffic congestion

Trendy Traffic Light Tech That’s Caught Our Eye This Month

Don’t be fooled by their humble history and everyday presence. Traffic light technology is at the forefront of innovation on our roads, whether this be making our routes safer, reducing congestion or simply putting a smile on a pedestrian’s face. This month, SRL has read a few traffic light news items that have really caught our eye, and here we share our favourites with you. Read on to get the latest!

1.Traffic Lights At Ground Level For Smartphone “Smombies”

SRL almost couldn’t believe this story when it appeared in The Telegraph recently. The newspaper reported that the German town of Augsburg has adopted a traffic light safety measure suited to the era of the distracted smartphone obsessive: traffic lights at ground level.

That’s right! Anyone who walks the streets whilst glued to their smartphone will now not even need to look up in order to cross the road safely, as the new lights will be strategically positioned to be in the eyeline of preoccupied pedestrians. In Germany, the term “smombie” – a blend of “zombie” and “smartphone” – has even been coined to describe those lost in the screens of their devices.

On a more serious note, a survey of six European capitals found that a shocking 25% of 25-35 year olds are glued to their screens whilst walking in the street, which has led to a series of accidents being caused by pedestrians wandering onto tram tracks or into busy traffic. Whilst currently only a pilot scheme at two stations, if the lights succeed in reducing accidents, local authorities will look at extending installation. Either way, SRL will definitely be keeping a close eye on this one!

2.Singing Traffic Lights Spread The Eurovision Spirit

The start of May saw the return of Eurovision, the international song contest known for showcasing the weird and wonderful. And it seems that this year, traffic lights have been utilised as part of the  kooky celebrations. For the second year, traffic lights enjoyed their own taste of the limelight, with Stockholm’s traffic control system playing the music of past Swedish winners to the delight of pedestrians.

The ticker boxes integrated into traffic lights that help visually-impaired people cross roads safely were modified to blast out two separate Swedish songs – one when the lights were on green, and another when on red. An innovative way of using an element of traffic management has been able to play its part in bringing people together, whilst maintaining its essential safety function.

3.“The Internet Of Things” Set To Take Over Traffic Management

We’ve all been stuck in a jam or had our journey delayed – often at the most inconvenient times. And most of us will have dreamed of a transport system as smart as the rest of our modern technology. Well, the good news is that, as reported by the BBC, tech experts have optimistically assured us that relief from gridlocked roads is on the not so distant horizon.

We’re told that this is all down to the ever-expanding “internet of moving things” – such as cars, buses and bikes which are decked out with sensors beaming data to “the cloud”. The basic underlying concept to this brain-puzzling projection is that the better we know where everything is, the better we can manage traffic flows. This means smoother routes, less congestion and safer drives for everyone.

In the future, traffic lights may well be optimised with the “internet of moving things”, so that the traffic management systems works at its most efficient, all of the time. It’s an exciting prospect that SRL looks forward to seeing in action.

SRL Kick Off 2016 HAUC Shows At Newport

Despite more than a few rainy days, spring is now upon us. And for SRL, this means that HAUC season is well underway. On Tuesday 19th April, we kicked off our annual programme of event exhibitions with the Newport HAUC at Celtic Manor, South Wales.

We set up a stand to showcase our wide range of traffic management products, including our industry-leading Urban 64 temporary traffic light system and ever-popular Radiolight and Pedlight solutions. The SRL team were also on hand to chat with delegates about traffic light rental, battery light rental, and all other manner of products and services that we specialise in. We were also happy to guide guests in the direction of their nearest depot – and with our network now standing at 21 locations – we can guarantee that customers will never be far from SRL service.

SRL is proud to be the UK’s number one supplier to the traffic management industry, and to continue providing great service, it’s essential that we keep up to date with sector developments. As well as being a chance to spread the world about SRL, HAUC shows allow us to better understand the climate of the traffic management industry and how this affects our customers.

The Newport HAUC played host to The National HAUC (UK) Convention “Delivering the Future”, which featured an interactive round-table approach, with a mix of plenary and discussion sessions. The convention covered a range of hot topics in the industry, such as an increasing population generating greater traffic volumes, and how collaboration and innovation can deliver world-class infrastructure. The HAUC Convention proposed ideas of how professionals like SRL can meet these challenges, and we found it inspiring to see what others envision.

HAUCs are events run by The Highway Authorities and Utilities Committee (HAUC), an organisation which assists and advises the Government on issues relating to street works’ legislation, such as the implementation of the Traffic Management Act 2004.

Winning The Battle With The Disruptive British Weather

It’s well known that we Brits love a conversation about the weather – although usually about how much it disrupts our schedules! In the UK, we’re used to getting our share of unfavourable weather, but it’s important that we keep moving even when the elements are being unkind.

At SRL, we’re committed to keeping the British public on the roads, and work hard to make sure that disruption to drivers is kept to an absolute minimum. As leaders in supplying the traffic management industry, we make it our mission to deliver excellent service in all circumstances. Our exclusive selection of temporary and portable traffic lights are not just suitable for all your traffic management requirements, but also perform under the pressure of demanding environmental challenges.

The UK has been battered by storms in 2016, but this hasn’t stopped SRL from delivering unbeatable service to our clients and road users. Our traffic light products are designed to be technologically advance and durable, and have proved themselves to pass the tests of the British weather. For example, recent storm Imogen was no match for SRL’s Urban 64 temporary traffic light, which stood strong and kept traffic flow moving even when road conditions were at their most demanding.

And this isn’t an exception. Here at SRL, we’re always properly prepared to win the battle with the British weather. We offer comprehensive local support for your traffic light system, including 24/7 call out – so if something goes wrong with your permanent traffic lights in bad weather, or emergency roadworks are needed, we can be there to get your show back on the road. We also have an excellent stock of spare traffic light parts available next day, so if your lights are knocked out in strong winds, or a flood causes irreparable electrical damage, we can get operations back up and running in record time.

We are always trying to minimise disruption to road users, and constantly ensure that our products are fit to withstand any challenges posed by unpredictable events. SRL perform regular traffic light fleet inspections and undertake maintenance to guarantee that we won’t let you down, and we can also carry out repairs and servicing at any of your depots. With SRL, you can overcome even the worst of the great British weather!

Why Traffic Lights Are Still The Heroes of Our Highways

We know that traffic lights are essential to safe and effective highway management, even if red lights do sometimes cause a little irritation! It can be easy to forget the safety principles that underpin traffic management, and the fact that apparent improved traffic flow for some, can come at the expense of others.

But here at SRL, we strongly believe that traffic lights play an important role in our highway system. Traffic management isn’t as a clear-cut as it’s made out to be, and the benefits of light installation reach way beyond queue management. So, how do traffic lights make our roads a better place for everyone?

Safety: As you probably know, traffic lights improve road safety, especially at complex junctions and during rush hour. Studies reveal that when traffic lights are installed on an uncontrolled junction, there is a 50% reduction in injuries. It has also been observed that when various junctions are linked to one another via traffic light sequence, there are even fewer accidents. From an alternative point of view, traffic light controlled crossings also make it much safer and easier for pedestrians to cross busy and dangerous roads.

Air quality: A lesser known fact is the role traffic lights play in improving air quality. Many of us have concerns about vehicle emissions, but effective traffic management actually lessens the environmental impact of driving. Research has found that a car travelling steadily causes less pollution than a braking, stopping and accelerating car, meaning that deploying a green wave is much better for air quality. Industry technology development is focused on implementing traffic management solutions that prioritise air quality, so in the future, lights will be even more beneficial to our roads.

Traffic flow: At SRL, we firmly believe in the benefits of traffic lights to traffic flow. Critics of light-controlled traffic management take a very one dimensional view, and ignore how improved traffic flow for some road users can actually have a detrimental knock-on effect for other drivers. For example, traffic may be moving smoothly along a main road without traffic lights, but what happens to drivers trying to exit from side streets, car parks or driveways? Increasing traffic intensity also leads to growing pressure on important through routes in villages and towns, which leads to even more cars being caught up in congestion.

With all this in mind, it looks like traffic lights are indeed still the heroes of our highways. As our roads get increasingly busy, traffic management systems are essential to keeping us all safe, and keeping us moving.
