Malcolm Law

Shining the spotlight on Malcolm Law

As a father of eight children, Malcolm Law is certainly used to a busy lifestyle. So, when he decided to find a new role after being a full-time Dad, the job as an operative at SRL suited him to a tee.

Malcolm’s previous experience as an assistant manager with flooring company Marlings Ltd, and a crew trainer at McDonalds was impressive and he hit the ground running as an operative at our D7 depot in Bristol.

City and Guilds qualified in electronics, Malcolm is comfortable with technology and the fast pace of change, and it wasn’t long before he was promoted to supervisor of the depot.

“I’ve had a variety of customer-facing jobs and I’m at home with technology, so this role was ideal for me,” says Malcolm. “Having chosen to be out of the workplace for a little while to look after my family, it was great to find a role that used the skills and experience I had acquired in previous jobs.

“I was attracted to SRL because it is a stable and growing company that doesn’t stand still.” And things certainly haven’t stood still for Malcolm, who as supervisor covers an extensive area from Hereford and Weston-super-Mare and Cardiff to Swindon, seeing him drive more than 2,000 miles a month.

As well as managing around 15 customers and looking after all their traffic management needs, Malcolm also supports Paul Hamilton - our regional manager of the South & Midlands – to ensure that our service levels are the highest they can be.

“It’s a full on role, but I love a challenge and I always throw myself 100% into whatever I do, ” says Malcolm. “There is a lot of variety in my job – I can be checking our stock is correct, directing the team and dealing with multiple customer requests, then I may be helping another depot or going out in the field to put out lights and exchange batteries. This job requires commitment and stamina, but thankfully, as a father of eight, I have plenty of that!”

Law and order

Malcolm’s dedication and energy shine through, none more so than when he was awarded the title of ‘Apprentice of the Year’ with training provider Time2Train. Malcolm passed his 12-month apprenticeship in Driving Goods Vehicles (DGV) with flying colours, but is modest about his achievement. “I just did the best I could,” he says.

Always calm and prepared, Malcolm does everything that’s needed to ensure our customers receive the very highest levels of service they expect from SRL. “If the customer is happy, I’m happy,” he adds.

Malcolm is no stranger to late-night emergency calls and is on hand to help, whatever the hour. “I had a phone call at 11.30 one night not long ago. A lorry had gone through a set of permanent lights on a major trunk road near Avonmouth and had ended up in a ditch,” he reveals. “I was on site within an hour to set up temporary traffic lights and assist the police in managing the scene.”

Another recent call out for Malcolm involved a long drive to Cambourne on behalf of the Exeter depot to set lights up at short notice. “The customer needed us there and we jumped straight onto servicing their request. It was a long trip and I didn’t finish until the early hours, but that’s what my job is all about,” Malcolm adds.

With his background in electronics, Malcolm is always keen to see the new technologies that are emerging from the SRL stable. “There have been so many exciting launches I’ve seen, like SRL’s Multiphase Adaptive System (ADS) and the Instaboom vehicle barrier, which customers have been really enthusiastic about. SRL pushes the boundaries with constant innovation – it is a genuine industry pioneer.”

“I try my best”

So, what has been Malcolm’s proudest moment since joining SRL? “Becoming a supervisor so quickly after joining SRL was a real highlight for me,” says Malcolm. “It’s so rewarding to know that SRL has faith in me and trusts me to do my job well. But I think my proudest moment was when a customer contacted Malcolm Johnstone, MD of our hire division, to say how much I had supported them. To be praised by a customer like that is really fulfilling.”

Malcolm is well known for his catchphrase “I try my best” and he has certainly made an enormous contribution to SRL since he joined. Senior training manager Chris Bissicks recently said that the Bristol depot “is the strongest it’s ever been”, which is high praise indeed for Malcolm and the rest of the team.

Malcolm is proof if ever any is needed that putting the customer first what SRL is all about. We wish you more success in your career with SRL, Malcolm.
