Enhancing our technical capabilities

Matt is part of the Product Management and Compliance team and works closely with our group product and compliance manager Kevin Gilday, our business development director Iain McDonald and the rest of the team. He’s already proved to be an enormous asset to the business, helping to align us to further develop our technical capabilities and enhance our range of products to satisfy the ever-changing needs of our customers.

Enthusiastic about the future potential of the highways industry, Matt is constantly looking for opportunities within the sector and ways that SRL products can be integrated with other SRL solutions as well as additional traffic management technologies to ultimately improve safety on the UK’s roads and enhance the driver’s experience.

“For me, it’s all about making traffic management equipment smarter and multi-functional so that we can react to driver behaviours and road conditions automatically and make the roads of the future more seamless and better overall for everyone.”

High-speed capabilities

Matt brings a fresh pair of eyes to the table and his enviable experience in VMS and knowledge of the high-speed network is helping the business to increase its presence in these rapidly growing markets.

“We’re just starting a high-profile new project with the Smart Motorways Alliance on the M62 near Leeds. It’s a key strategic partnership, which aims to improve safety and efficiency on this busy stretch of motorway,” says Matt.

“Under the project, the metal barriers on the central reservation will be replaced with concrete barriers and we’ll have up to 20 signs out at any time on a stretch of motorway between junctions 25 and 30. This 11-month project is part of a major 10-year framework, so it’s very important to us.”

With his expertise in variable message signs, Matt was an obvious choice for this significant project. “For this scheme, it really has helped that I don’t come from a signals background,” adds Matt. “I have a lot of knowledge on the high-speed network and I’m excited to be helping to develop solutions that are specifically targeted at this sector.”

Matt has helped to boost our extensive high-speed knowledge and with our capabilities constantly developing, this is a key focus for future growth for SRL. 

VMS is an exciting technology with huge potential in the high speed arena, but also within other applications, such as utilities, local councils and events.

Eyes ahead

Clearly driven by innovation, Matt always has his eyes on the future. So, what does he see ahead for SRL?

“SRL is an ambitious business and it has a unique motivation to drive forward to the next level. It has invested in the people and infrastructure to help it achieve its goals and I see no reason why it won’t build on its position as the UK and Republic of Ireland’s leading manufacturer and supplier of portable and temporary ITS equipment and integrated systems to become a major player in the rest of Europe.”

There’s no doubt that Matt’s zest for innovation and his technical prowess will help us build a very exciting future ahead. We’re raring to go!
