Shining the spotlight on Ryan Pearce

There’s a saying that some people ‘work to live’ while others ‘live to work’ and the latter is certainly true for our D3 supervisor Ryan Pearce. You’d probably struggle to find someone who enjoys their job as much as Ryan.

Ryan joined SRL four years ago as an operative at our D3 depot in Newcastle. From the outset, he excelled in his work, taking the time to get to know our products and customers and delivering high standards in everything he did. So, when former supervisor Lee Graham was promoted to training manager two and a half years ago, it was no surprise that Ryan was chosen to fill his shoes.

“I was delighted to be given the opportunity to become a supervisor,” says Ryan. “The role comes with a lot of responsibility and hard work, but I thrive on that. This job is a lifestyle and it may not suit everybody, but it is perfect for me. I really do enjoy coming to work every day. I love my job.”

As well as supervising D3 and overseeing workloads for the five operatives that report to him, organising customer call-outs and inspections, booking jobs, arranging battery exchanges, managing stock and maintaining our kit, Ryan also looks after D96 – our refurbishment centre, which is based on the same industrial estate as D3.

“All the box refurbs for the whole of the country are sent to this centre, so it’s an important part of the business.” says Ryan. “When the lights arrive, we strip down the metalwork of the boxes and galvanise them, so they look like new again. We can have up to 100 boxes in at any time, so it’s never quiet.”

Going above and beyond

Ryan has a genuine passion for his job and it shines through in how he supports his team and our customers, often when he is not on duty.

“We had an out of hours call-out recently when the permanent lights had gone down on the north and southbound slip roads of the A1 near The Metro Centre in Gateshead. It was 6.30pm on a Friday evening and the roads were becoming very congested. My colleague, another Ryan, was on shift and was attending the call-out, but I went along too to lend a hand. We had a new temporary Eurolight system up and running in one and a half hours and our customer - RoadSafe Traffic Management - was very satisfied.”

This level of dedication to his colleagues has helped Ryan to build a close-knit team of people who all work hard to look after our customers. “Everyone in my team wants to deliver for our customers and they all go above and beyond to achieve this,” adds Ryan. “They really are a brilliant team.”

The feedback the team gets is testimony to the hard work it puts in, as Ryan explains: “Our regional managers receive feedback when we carry out our customer inspections and we have had no negative comments whatsoever. That’s an achievement I’m very proud of.”

Sharing groundbreaking developments

A natural ‘people person’, Ryan likes building relationships with his customers and showing them new SRL products as soon as they launch. “I really enjoy getting to know my customers and sharing the latest SRL innovations with them,” says Ryan. “Our Multiphase ADS system is generating demand - we have some on trial at the moment and one customer took out 10 units after a trial. Another new product - Instaboom - is becoming popular and we currently have four on hire.”

Ryan has seen a huge level of growth at SRL since he joined in 2017 and he is excited about the future. “It’s been incredible to see how SRL is pushing ahead – opening new depots and developing innovative new products. We are the best in the industry and it’s been terrific for me to be a part of that journey.”

So, what’s the best thing about working at SRL for Ryan? “It’s all good, it really is! I genuinely enjoy coming to work and being part of a great team of people. SRL invests in people and there is a lot of opportunity for development and progression within the business, so I intend to work hard and be the best I can be. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else!”

With such a level of dedication, you could say that Ryan is married to his job, but he is set to tie the knot for real with his fiancée in August. We wish you all the best for a very happy future together, Ryan.
